A Chronicle of the History of Timex

Timex began operations in the mid-1800s in Waterbury, a city in Connecticut. Known as the Waterbury Clock Company, it became one of the biggest watch manufacturers in the world within a few years. In its 165 years of existence, the company has created some spectacular models that have become legendary. Set up in 1854, Timex has witnessed both good times and rough phases. But with its ingenuity and professionalism, the company has sailed through bad times and has regularly been launching new products which are innovative and inspiring and include sports watches as well as stylish watches for women and men.

In the later part of the 19th century, the company introduced the Ingersoll Yankee, which costed one dollar. The watch caught the fancy of the people and by the beginning of the 20th century; millions of Ingersoll Yankees had been sold around the United States. WW1 led the company to make new innovations and by making slight modifications to the pocket watch the company created the wristwatch. The watch was basically made for gunners to enable them to operate their guns and also keep checking time regularly. But it soon became popular among the civilian population who found it much more convenient than the pocket watch. The company’s ingenuity also came to the fore when reeling under financial difficulties brought about by the great depression. The company introduced the Mickey Mouse Watches and clocks at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933.

In 1950, the Timex brand was born and soon the advertising slogan ‘Timex – Takes a Licking and Keeps on Ticking’ was conceived. The ad campaign saw live torture tests being conducted on the watch. The campaign showcased the durability of the watch and helped increase sales. It became the top-selling watch in the United States and in the 60s, out of every three watches sold in the United States, one was Timex.

By the 1970s, the US watch and clock industry were plagued by problems and financial issues due to the introduction of cheap East Asian watches and the Japanese digital quartz watches in the United States. Timex tried to venture into other businesses but abandoned them and by the mid-80s returned to manufacturing watches. The company made improvements and added new features to their watches like water-resistance, longer battery life, greater accuracy among others. These continuous improvements resulted in the creation of the Iron Triathlon in 1986. Within a short time, the watch became popular among the people, especially athletes. In 1992, Timex introduced the revolutionary Indiglo night time technology. The watch emitted light during the night which enabled people to read time in the dark.

The 21st century has seen the emergence of new technologies. However, Timex has stayed ahead of its competitors by continuously upgrading its products and adapting to the changing technologies by introducing useful features like GPS, heart monitor, etc. in its watches. Today it is among the leading watch manufacturers with a huge fanbase that is continuously growing.
