Do you know the cost of wearing your gold wedding ring everyday?

Gold is one of the most popular precious metals in the world. It has a lot of properties that make it ideal to use in different products from jewellery to electronic products. Of all the industries that consume gold, the jewellery industry consumes the most. Gold is popular in the jewellery making industry because it is such a malleable and ductile metal.

George Steinhauser who is a famous chemist from Vienna, conducted a study to find out the effects of wearing a gold ring everyday as you do your daily duties. Basically, this is what married people do- they never take their gold wedding rings off. If you’ve ever wondered what the effects of doing that are, you should be ad to know that scientists like George Steinhauser also wondered and took the time to study what happens to a gold ring if you never take it off.

Logic dictates that every metal is susceptible to wear and tear if it is used every day. You can prevent your gold jewellery from being worn-out by taking good care of it.

George Steinhauser, who was a chemist at the Vienna University of Technology did a study on how gold wears off over time if it is ne we taken off as one goes about doing their daily activities. George Steinhauser might have been curious because he was about to get married but people who are about to get married seldom think about this until the marriage ends and they are trying to cash for gold. What Steinhauser found was that over when you wear your gold ring and continue with your daily activities without taking it off, you lose about 0.12 milligrams per week. This number might sound small but it adds up with time. This is one reason why the ring you bought 15 years ago for a whole lot of money isn’t worth that much when your trying to get some cash for gold.

Most people take advantage of the fact that gold does not tarnish which means it can withstand various extraneous activities without dulling.

Pure gold is soft and because of that it is alloyed with other metals like copper to make it more durable. George Steinhauser’s stidy does not tell ups if it’s just the gold that gets lost or the alloy too. But that is besides the point. The point is when you sell gold jewellery like a wedding ring you have worn for years to gold buyers, cash for gold companies or pawnbrokers, they will weigh it. If like most people, you never took it off, forget about referring to the document that specifies the weight of the gold rind when you bought it. It will most certainly be different.  Don’t even think about using price you bought the gold ring for as a benchmark.

If you must, weigh your gold ring before you approach a gold buyer or Pawnbroker, check what the current “spot price” of gold is and try, if you can, to work out what the value of your used wedding ring. Manage your expectations, the stones that added bling to your ring might be worth less to a gold buyer. The big take away here is that if you want your gold ring to look good and be worth something substantial when you sell it, you should teach yourself to take it off when doing chores and other extraneous activities. It will look good and valuable for longer.
